BIOGRAPHY:
Artist David Mandle was born on May 19, 1959 in Carlisle, an urban settlement within Cumbria, England. Nicknamed the Border City, Carlisle today is the main cultural, commercial and industrial centre for north Cumbria.
David’s artistic skills are largely self-taught, having enjoyed sketching and drawing since his early teens. At school, David studied art up to “A” level and upon leaving school his career path took him initially into the financial services industry and more recently into lecturing and training. During this time David continued to develop his drawing and sketching techniques. Pencil is David’s preferred medium. Ever since he was a young man, David has enjoyed working with pencil; developing and refining his drawing and rendering skills throughout his life. Much of his very early work consisted of black and white pencil drawings of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, two of David’s boyhood heroes! Over time David’s pencil work’s evolved into landscapes and detailed drawings of buildings, some of which were produced in color pencil.
David enjoys seeing the results that can be achieved by using a combination of both soft and hard pencils and the range of effects that can be produced by blending and toning different pencil shades to give an almost photographic appearance. David states, “Achieving the level of detail I like to see in my work takes a considerable amount of time with many of my drawings taking several months to complete.” His extraordinary talents in this medium are quite evident in the color and detail of his most current works consisting of original as well as limited edition prints in B&W and color pencil.
Although David has been producing drawings for many years now, it is only recently that his work has gone on public display. His drawings can currently be seen at various craft fairs and small galleries in and around Carlisle and he hopes to be able to continue taking his work to new audiences for years to come.
David currently resides in the small market town and civil parish of Brampton within the City of Carlisle district of Cumbria, England.
