ARTIST STATEMENT:

I am a self taught watercolour artist, which I believe has been the best way for me to develop my own unique style and technique, as there are no boundaries.  I love the luminosity and subtle layers of colour I can achieve with water colour.

Living in the rural county of Shropshire, I mainly paint watercolour landscapes of this amazing county, but I also paint portrait commissions.  My painting style has more layers of paint than the usual watercolour paintings you see.  To achieve this technique it can take many hours and patience.  I work from sketches I have made on location and also use photographs as a reference.

In my paintings I try to convey the things I observe, such as the effects of weather on buildings and nature, where the moss grows on the bark of a tree and the green, grey and brown colours of the bark.  I'm atempting to make you lookk at the world around you in more detail.

Painting with watercolours can be technically challenging, not only in knowing the amount of paint to water ratio, but also I choose not to use white or black paint in my paintings.  All the white areas of my paintings are the paper and I don't use masking fluid to protect the white areas, as I feel this inhibits the flow of watercolour.
