BIOGRAPHY:

Jimmy Leslie has always been an artist (walls in his childhood bedroom and desks at school).  After receiving his MFA from the New York Academy of Art, Jimmy spent 15 years as a college art professor until 2009 when he became the Resident Artist for Winsor & Newton and Liquitex Artist Materials where he gets to play with a lot of paint and Direct the Artist Outreach Program.   Jimmy is also the co-Director of the Collective Art Tank of Asbury Park which is underwritten by Winsor & Newton and Liquitex.

Jimmy is New Jersey born and bred and his paintings have been exhibited throughout New Jersey, as well as New York, Oregon, Texas, Nebraska, Idaho, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina,  South Carolina, Massachusetts, Illinois and New Hampshire.

In an effort to continually push boundaries and experiment, Jimmy works with diverse modes of expression in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media collage. His work has most recently been seen at The Currier Museum Art Center, Manchester NH, The Limner Gallery, Hudson, NY, Illinois Central College, East Peoria, Il., the inaugural exhibit of the Joan and Robert Rechnitz Hall on the campus of Monmouth University, West Long Branch, NJ., Studio 7, Bernardsville, NJ and the North Charleston City Gallery in South Carolina.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

“It’s important for all artists to continue to experiment in order to grow  and I find myself moving in several directions simultaneously as I do so.  Landscape provides me with the opportunity to capture places around me both near and far while offering the challenge of dealing with changing light.  Figurative work was my first love and I continue to be intrigued by its complexities.  Mixed media collage lets me explore the possibilities within the juxtaposition of found objects, while purely abstract paintings allow me to focus solely on the formal properties of paint that excites my senses.   But regardless of my subject matter it’s all really just an excuse to put paint on canvas, paper, or any other surface that interests me.”
