Laura Blaker

BIOGRAPHY:

Laura was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent her teenage years in Phoenix, Arizona. Laura’s career in the arts began in 1979 when she graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art in Denver. She worked as a graphic designer for advertising agencies in Colorado, Arizona and Montana.

In 1993, she opened her own design shop, Arts Place in Missoula, Montana, where she also worked as a freelance scenic painter for MCT Community Theatre, the University of Montana and Bigfork Playhouse. She discovered her love for the large canvas while working as a scenic painter and began an 18-year career as a muralist. You can find her murals in more than 40 HuHot restaurants across the United States.

In 2008, Laura spent the summer in Florence, Italy studying and improving her technique. She has had numerous art shows in Missoula, including the Missoula Artist Show and Icons of the West shows at the Dana Gallery, is on Xanadu's Online Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona and has been part of two group shows in New York City.

Laura uses an impasto style in acrylic to enhance the color and texture of the painting. She builds up the acrylic starting with a black ground and a red underpainting so that when light hits it there are layers of different colors peeking through. Her goal is to create an impressionistic image that is on the verge of abstract, that pulls you into the world as she sees it with the vibrant color and energy of the impasto style.
