BIOGRAPHY:

I was born in Seville, Spain. My sculptures and paintings are informed by Pop Art, Expressionism and influenced by my cross cultural identity as a southern Spanish artist living in London. I completed my degree in Sculpture at Camberwell College/University of Arts, London in 2012. Since then I have exhibited my work at a number of venues across London including Cultivate, The Biscuit Factory, The Crypt of St George the Martyr and The Institute of Education. I live and work in London. At the moment I am preparing my first solo exhibition in April 2014 in Brixton, London.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

My works are hybrid structures that embody playful pastiches of pop cultural associations. Informed by a variety of art  movements such as  Pop Art and  Abstract

Expressionism, I enjoy mixing the ‘readymade’ with formalist values in a crossbreed of sculpture and painting. My desire is to create works of art that connect a celebratory vision of life-lived-in-the-present, juxtaposed with transitory iconography.

My paintings are inspired by embracing organic forms by taking the rough properties found within nature including weather and applying and intertwining these with my own style and approach. The colour of decay creates a stimulating array; I am attracted by the qualities of corroded metals, reflective surfaces and the iridescent colours and rough textures found in minerals. I aspire to recreate the same qualities on the canvas.

By using a wide range of art materials which include acrylic and oil paints, foils and mastics applied onto canvass or wood, I create this effect using PVA glue to construct depth, dimension and textures in a sculptural style. I allow the textures and colours to build, working on new layers each time. The inspiration of these paintings is to catch and evoke the viewer’s emotions; the rich tones and blends of pigments is enhanced by use of texture giving it a sense of warmth by rejecting cold undertones. I have a real zest in creating individual abstracts which reflect depth and intensity to create a rich tone of colours that are often balanced but sometimes can contradict.

Playing with a variety of assemblages, my purpose is to set up amusing and kitsch arrangements, confronting high art with popular culture, to speculate about the cultural values around us. I am intrigued by the challenge of making sculpture with assemblages of consumer items. It is an individual adventure, a particular aesthetic with alternative perspectives and colours that creates a subject matter of these ingredients, starting with a spatial investigation of my sociological landscape. My work is not based on a specific technique, but in terms of the symbolic properties that materials can provide and the relationships that can keep the context in which it participates.
